So this week I have been reminiscing about raising our backyard chickens. Our brood of hens were born on August 30th, 2016 so they are just about to turn 3 months old! They have grown so much in such a short amount of time. When they were just day old chicks, young chicks, and even young adults, they were terrified of me. When I came up to open the coop or stepped inside to fill their waterer they would flap into a corner squishing each other to get as far away from me as they could.
Over time, we’ve developed a stronger bond and they have begun to trust me, which is totally awesome. The other day I was standing on the back porch calling our dog (not the chicken killer, the chicken protector, Diamond). Not only did both our cats come sauntering up to see if I was offering up a tasty morsel of food, but the entire brood also came running!
It was absolutely hilarious to see them running across the yard. They came all the way up to the porch and then stood there looking at me like, okay, we came, where’s the food! Lol. I ran inside and grabbed some cereal, which seems to be one of their favorite treats. I had no idea what it was going to be like having chickens in our backyard but I have to say, I totally freakin love it!
They are interesting, beautifully colored, lovely to watch and they make me laugh out loud at least once a day. Instead of posting a single picture, I decided to post a bit of a collage so you can see how much they’ve grown! It’s honestly totally amazing! Gotta love raising backyard chickens! If you have the patience, the time and the space I highly recommend adding even a couple of chicks to your daily routine!
Thanks for stopping by! 🙂
